DETAILED ITINERARY
DAY ONE: ARRIVAL TO LA PAZ
Our Baja Adventure begins with the arrival of our group into La Paz, Baja California Sur. After clearing customs, you will catch a cab to our hotel (we will reimburse you for the cab) and check in anytime after 3:00pm. Our group will gather for dinner at 7:30pm with a more formal orientation in the morning (double occupancy rooms and dinner included).
DAY TWO: IN SEARCH OF WHALE SHARKS, BAHIA DE LA PAZ
For the next two days, our group will depart after breakfast in search of whale sharks!
Whale Sharks, the largest fish on the planet can reach a length of over 40 feet and weigh 47,000 pounds! Relatively little is known about these enigmatic animals which may live to 100 years of age and sustain themselves on a diet of plankton.
As filter feeders, they offer no threat to humans and snorkeling with them is an incredible experience. In November, whale sharks are commonly sighted in the shallow water off of La Paz and our hope is to swim with these enormous animals.
As fish, whale sharks obtain oxygen through their gills and are not required to breathe at the surface as whales do. In November, Bahia de la Paz tends to be calm increasing our chances of spotting the shark's massive shape below the water's surface.
As with most wildlife, encounters are not guaranteed but in November, chances to observe these animals are excellent.
To learn more about whale sharks please visit: whale sharks or more on sharks (double occupancy rooms and all meals included).
DAY THREE: IN SEARCH OF WHALE SHARKS TO ESPIRITU SANTO ISLAND, SEA OF CORTEZ
In the morning you will have time to rent any gear (sleeping bags, pads, wetsuits, ) that you will need for our camping adventure. After searching for whale sharks, a motorboat will transfer us to our dramatically scenic island base camp in the beautiful Sea of Cortez. Our camp is located on a large protected bay that is ideal for kayaking, beachcombing, snorkeling and swimming. Join a naturalist in the afternoon as we search the rocky shore for octopus, brittle sea stars, sea cucumbers
and other invertebrates that the Sea of Cortez is famously known for.
We will be camping in comfort with roomy tents, sun showers and porta pottys with a privacy tent.
DAY FOUR: ESPIRITU SANTO ISLAND, SEA OF CORTEZ
Today we will explore outer islands by sea kayak enjoying the warm water and desert scenery. Fall snorkeling is excellent with various species of damselfish, puffers and colorful angelfishes finding refuge in the rocky reef crevices. Join a naturalist on a swim over the rocky reef to learn about the strange behaviors of reef fish and invertebrates that flourish in the crystal clear water of the Sea of Cortez.
DAY FIVE: ESPIRITU SANTO ISLAND, SEA OF CORTEZ
Our support boat will take us to Los Islotes,a sea lion rookery where we can snorkel with these graceful animals, members of the pinniped (feathered foot) order. Using a mask and snorkel, observe the sea lions seemingly fly underwater using their strong front flippers to propel themselves. Other activities available at Espiritu Santo Island include fishing, hiking the rugged canyons, night paddling and solo time along the shores of our enchanted island.
DAY SIX: ESPIRITU SANTO ISLAND TO LA PAZ
After breakfast, we will transfer by motorboat back to La Paz for a quick shower before we depart for our afternoon flights back home (airport transfer included).
